msg09news.jpg

New York City and Madison Square Garden provides an undeniable energy and both the band and the fans were ready to get this tour off and running.

Dave Matthews Band kicked off the 2009 Spring Tour at Madison Square Garden on April 14th with an exciting set list!

"Why I am still here dancing with the GrooGrux King", a lyric from the new song "Why I Am". One of three new songs from "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King" that were played. Prior to performing "Why I Am", Dave Matthews said that this song was LeRoi's favorite while recording in the studio. "Spaceman" and first single "Funny The Way It Is" were also played and were well received by the MSG crowd.

"Funny The Way It Is" became available as a free download on DMB's official website, being announced by Dave through Twitter, posting "why don't we start the day off with a little bit of new music..."

The set list had a good mixture of songs, with Raven (last played 08/26/06), Recently and Pig (which was played instead of Granny). A surprise guest, Gregg Allman graced the staged with DMB for a performance of "Melissa". The show also included songs "Cornbread", "#27" and "Sister" which have become standards the past few tours, but are not going to be included on the new album as we now have an official track list for Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King.

While Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King is not released until June 2nd and it is unknown if more than just these three songs will be played live (we are only 2 shows into the tour), but most of the new songs will likely be in heavy rotation by the summer.
