Waste (Phish Cover) (Lyrics)

Dave recorded this Phish song for the 2001 Phish tribute album Sharin' in the Groove. The album is comprised of Phish songs being played by bands and artists by whom Phish was influenced, and the CD booklet has the following to say about Dave's contribution: "Dave's unique guitar tunings and distinctive voice intrigued Phish early on. His band opened three Phish shows, he shared the stage with them on at least two other occasions, and Trey recently (5-20-01) [ed. note: the correct date is 5.19.01] performed with the Dave Matthews Band. Here Dave offers a rare acoustic release, playing a song from the Phish album he has said brought him near tears." It's unclear what "unique guitar tunings" they're talking about, but it's a nice note nonetheless.

Dave frequently played this song to open encores on the 2001 tour. At Dave and Friends shows, Dave and Trey sometimes play this song during their acoustic mini-set during the encore, alternating verses and singing harmony on the refrain. - dmbalmanac

Waste (Trey Anastasio / Tom Marshall)

Don't want to be an actor, pretending on the stage;
Don't want to be a writer with my thoughts out on the page;
Don't want to be a painter 'cause everyone comes to look;
Don't want to be anything where my life's an open book.

A dream, it's true,
But I'd see it through
If I could be
Wasting my time with you.

Don't want to be a farmer, working in the sun;
Don't want to be an outlaw, always on the run;
Don't want to be a climber, reaching for the top;
Don't want to be anything where I don't know when to stop.

A dream, it's true,
But I'd see it through
If I could be
Wasting my time with you.

So, if I'm in side your head,
Don't believe what you might have read.
You'll see what I might have said,
To hear it:

Come waste your time with me.
Come waste your time with me.

So, if I'm in side your head,
Don't believe what you might have read.
You'll see what I might have said,
To hear it:

Come waste your time with me.
Come waste your time with me.
Come waste your time with me.
Come waste your time with me.
Come waste your time with me.
