Things We Cannot Change
As I sit here, glued to the TV, watching CNN's broadcast of the historic inauguration of President Obama, I can't help but think about the idea of change. For many of us, welcoming the new president is a change that couldn't come fast enough. But what about those changes in life that we couldn't predict, didn't choose, and simply wouldn't want? The latter describes how countless Dave Matthews Band fans are feeling about the crushing loss of arguably one of the best saxophone players of all time, Mr. Leroi Moore (1961-2008). Words can't express the sorrow that swept the DMB community when news of Leroi's passing was announced. An outpouring of grief and condolences to the band and Leroi's family ensued, and we are by no means done grieving. Instead, we're listening to our favorite versions of #34, Grey Street, and Stolen Away on 55th, marveling at Leroi's unbelievable ability and finesse. And yet, as we speak, the band is in the studio perfecting the new album, and the Spring tour is only 3 months away!

Dave Matthews Band Tour Flashback: 1995
"Hey, this is bigger then we thought”, said Carter Beauford, drummer and founding member of the Dave Matthews Band, describing how he felt opening for the Grateful Dead in the summer of 1995. With the success of Dave Matthews Band’s release "Under the Table and Dreaming" in September 1994, the year to follow was bound to knock them off their feet and shoot them into stardom. The word was beginning to spread beyond the east coast college campuses and into mainstream media. Even with their new found commercial recognition, DMB stayed true to what got them to where they were: playing music. They spent the majority of 1995 touring and performing sold out shows across the county and around the world. This was, without a doubt, an exciting year for DMB and a pivotal moment in their careers. Over all the years and memorable performances, 1995 is a year that stands out in the hearts of DMB fans. Join us for a little trip back in time, highlighting the 1995 touring season and all the reasons why it was so unforgettable.

DMB kicked off their winter tour on January 26, 1995. With Big Head Todd and the Monsters and the Ugly Americans in tow as the opening act, DMB traveled along the East Coast playing in small venues. The first stop was Memorial Auditorium in Burlington Virginia. The show opened with “Seek Up” and closed with “Ants Marching”. Fans got a treat when Trey Anastasio of Phish guested with the band for the very first time on “Jimi Thing”.

Magic and Mystery Tour
As the last leaves fall of the trees and fall turns into winter, many people find themselves feeling uncharacteristically blue. For some, this condition, known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), can be almost debilitating. Dave fans know this all too well, except that for us (SAD) stands for Severely Absent Dave. Every year, at the conclusion of the summer tour we're forced into involuntary Dave withdrawal for far too long. Luckily, my friends, 2009 will be different, as we have a Spring tour to look forward to, which kicks off April 14th at Madison Square Garden. So, what is it about being at a Dave Matthews Band show that can put a spring in our steps and shake up our bones and feet?

A Surprise on the Way, Any Day, Any Day
The year 2009 will be an exciting one for Dave Matthews Band aficionados. With the release of a new studio album expected early in the year, anticipation is growing among the groups' faithful followers. We're all wondering what to expect and how the tracks will resonate with us. There's understandable anxiety about how the chemistry of DMB has been altered due to the death of Leroi, and how that will play out in the music, although deep down we know the gang will pull through and deliver something amazing. Still, even the most devout fans might be wondering if the new production will meet our lofty expectations. Can we love these novel tunes as much as our old favorites?

So Damn Unlucky?
Recently, there's been a lot of hype about Dave and Stefan on Twitter. Fans everywhere are trying to figure out the magic formula to score a coveted response. Some “twitterers” say Dave only responds to "tweets" about sex, politics, and of course farts, while others say it's all about being online at the right moment. I wish I could say I've been immune to the craziness, but I too, have played the game and been rewarded with a single answer. I asked Dave whether he puts his bananas in a bag when he buys them at the store, and he said, “I bring a banana bag along.” Great, ecological answer. Of course, if I knew he was going to respond, I probably would have chosen a different question!

DMB Song Evolution: Recently

February 24th, 2008

“People stare and we just ignore…”

recentlyevolution.jpg“Recently”, another fan favorite has had a lot of history through Dave Matthews Band’s career. “Recently” is one of many songs that Dave Matthews wrote very early on, long before they had a recording contract and even before they had the whole band together.

The first known studio recording of “Recently” came as early as 1990-91 on a couple demo tapes.

“Recently” was first released on the album “Remember Two Things”, which consists of a collection of live performances from various shows. This was their first album released independently on their label, Bama Rags Records. The recording of “Recently” featured on this album was taken from their performance on August 10th, 1993.

While “Recently” was never recorded and released on any of their studio albums, it was released as a promotional EP in 1994 on the Bama Rags label with two different covers and track listings. One cover had a man holding a pumpkin (bama 002) and the other without (bama 003). The “Recently” EP was then re-released in 1997 by DMB’s current label RCA.

ebayadsmall.jpgThe Bama Rags 002 release of “Recently” contains only 4 songs, which were all radio edits and different artwork than the re-release by RCA and the secondary Bama release. This cover features a man holding a pumpkin. This makes this promotional copy of “Recently” probably one of the rarest releases in DMB history and the most wanted by fans. This release came around April-May 1994, just months before their first studio album, and only limited amount were made and mostly distributed to radio stations. While some other promotional releases are very hard to find, this particular release holds a lot of value and has occasionally been found auctioned on Ebay for hundreds of dollars.

The Bama Rags 003 release of “Recently” features only the radio edit of “Recently” and 4 additional live songs from various shows. In addition, the cover art is without the pumpkin. This release is still quite rare, but not nearly as rare as Bama 002.

In 1997, RCA wanted to re-release the “Recently” EP and did so using the Bama 003 version, which can be easily found in any retail store.
